Usually you get driven mad and kill yourself.
Personally I'd ignore them until they went away, or if they were too obtrusive, I'd chat to them normally, goto the pub with them, until they gave up.

I was told put heat on it (this will make it temporarily worse) then ice for a long time.
You could then put a patch on it and say you've given up smoking!

I can't remember where I heard it but someone called it the 'beer compass' -the ability to get home even if you can't remember how. i was told I was doing bruce lee impressions once, and had a whole 'phone conversation with someone about an idea that I can't remember having!

Heard, sadly, a few stories like this (one involving a US senator) and it makes me want to a) beat the parents with a cricket bat and b)wonder if people should have tests to see if they should have kids.
Most parents would give their life for their children, but then some won't even give an effort. Its heart breaking, but I've a good friend who's just had a baby girl. She's lovely and VVV well behaved, and the parents are both great people and I know will treat her brillantly, so I'm happy for them.
The child in the story has a bad beginning to life, but can recover and in a loving family will get a lot of help and I'm sure will be OK in the long run.

I've seen several things where people have had surgery whilst hypnotised, the last time was someone having heavy dental work done without pain-relief drugs of any kind.
