Messerwisser answers:

The main food/fuel for the brain is glucose, which you get from carbohydrates, which is a common ingredient in the most food.

You are what you eat, and that includes your brain. So what is the ultimate mastermind diet?

YOUR brain is the greediest organ in your body, with some quite specific dietary requirements. So it is hardly surprising that what you eat can affect how you think. If you believe the dietary supplement industry, you could become the next Einstein just by popping the right combination of pills. Look closer, however, and it isn't that simple. The savvy consumer should take talk of brain-boosting diets with a pinch of low-sodium salt. But if it is possible to eat your way to genius, it must surely be worth a try.

A similar question was posted not too long ago.

The best brain foods are those low in cholesterol, and which will reduce athrosclerotic plaque. Buildup of plaque, in the carotoids and blood vessels internal to the brain, starves the brain of oxygen and glucose. That is the main cause of senile dementia, as illustrated by placing elderly people in hyperbaric chambers and increasing their blood oxygen levels; they quickly return to their youthful mentality levels.

The brain is a bioelectric device. It is therefore important to keep the body's electrolytes up to an adequate level. When a person becomes dehydrated, one symptom is a decline in brain function. The person becomes disoriented, and is not even aware that (s)he is not seeing clearly, reasoning clearly, or speaking clearly. I have had a couple of bouts of severe dehydration (in excessively hot climates), and I can attest that this blanks out a breat deal of brain functioning.

That said, there is no food or medication that actually makes the brain improve, i.e., no brain steroids. The way to improve brain functioning -- beyond assuring adequate oxygen, glucose, and electrolytes (sodium, potassium) -- is exercise. Solving challenging puzzles, learning new subjects, practicing complex actions, and the like are the ways to strengthen the properly-nourished brain.

Hence, we have LycosIQ and the challenging problem of writing meaningful answers to preposterous questions.

My parents always said that fish was the best brain food. To this day I have still not met an intelligent fish.
