Teenager procecuted for using the word "Cult"
Police confiscated a 15 year old's placard which he used to describe the Church of Scientology during a demonstration in London. Protesters were banned by police from calling it a "Cult" because the term was, "abusive and insulting" Am I right when I think this is the 'religion' made famous by the actor Tom Cruise. Anyway were the police right in what they did or were they being a little too protective to the Church of Scientology
asked in Human rights, freedom of speech

the word is used in the news and documentries all the time. besides, it is a cult. all religions are a kind of cult. i think the student called it a dangerous cult, so it was used in a negative way.

Labelled a cult by its critics, defended as a bona fide religion by devotees, it is never far from the headlines, though it is generally viewed from these shores as another American oddity.

In the late 1940s Reader's Digest quoted Hubbard, then a sci-fi author, as saying: "If a man really wants to make a million dollars, the best way would be to start his own religion."
