Carrot or stick?
Which works better for you and why?
asked in psychology, incentives

CGA answers:

Carrot every time. But, for me the main carrot is the logical reason for something.

I guess you might be thinking of the latest Conservative proposal to offer a carrot for recycling rather than punish those that don't.

Carrot with occasional stick (although not in a "Max Mosely" fashion)...

A shame most decision makers only use the stick - although it's probably because the carrot doesn't always give you a way to pay for things if there's no take up

As to why, carrot is more motivational and you end up with happier people. Continuously use the stick and, while you may get results in the short term, long term results will suffer (particularly when someone grabs the stick off you and pounds you into the ground)

Both please.

Only problems is, this government wants to feed me the stick and then beat me to death with the carrot!

Carrot usually.

But there's no guarantee I won't develop a taste for cabbage instead.

I will not be bribed or be beaten. I know this will not come out right and may be taken the wrong way but here goes....

I only do what I want to do

That doesn't mean I can't compromise more just trying to say I am the sort that will weigh up my options and then make my choices even if it means I will suffer because of them.

I was born in the year of the horse and am like one in many ways... you may be able to lead me to water but you can't make me drink.

Supplement from 07/09/2008 09:12pm:

emm I suppose that makes the carrot the option that works best for me but only if I want that carrot and I have a chance of actually retrieving.....

what I mean is most carrots are dangled from sticks keeping them just out of reach so you need to make sure you pick the ones on a long enough string that you can swing it your way and catch it ;o)

suehayes answers:

Everything depends on the size of the carrot!

Who wouldn't be put off struggling without reward? If the journey is extremely strenuous & the carrot has shrunk, most of us would admit defeat half way there. Regardless of the scenario, whether it's dating, work-based bonuses, cleaning our boudoirs...if the reward hasn't satisfied our required sense of accomplishment then people will give up trying.

carott, you can see it's right there in front of you but you just can't quite reach it, so you try everything you can to get it.
