Is it true that a soggy dog won't do the shaking itself thing until its head or ears get wet?

Yes - so when you are bathing a dog, you always start at the tail and work your way towards the nose.

Also, to stop the dog shaking, just hold the head still - it doesn't know how to start the shake at any other point of its body, so a still head means you don't get showered during the shake-off!
