How many spacecraft are into a lunar orbit now ? Will they bring the spacecraft back to earth again ?

asked in Science, space travel

There is at least one craft, the Chandrayaan-1 (Indian), in orbit. The Japanese might also still have at least one one there.

Unfortunately, achieving a lunar orbit is difficult as the gravitational field is "lumpy" - this means staying in a stable orbit uses a fair amount of fuel and so not many folks bother.

I would very much doubt that the satellites deployed there will ever return to earth, but instead they will make another crater on the moon's face.
