What are the most commonly mis-spelt words in the English language?

asked in language, spelling

vultan answers:

I have no idea what official statistics might say, but as someone who reads an awful lot of stuff people post on the web, I'd say 'definitely', which everyone spells 'defiantly'.

There's a list here of the top 100 mis-spelt words but I may add to it when I've thought of more myself.

The one that comes to mind that so many seams to misspell is benefit - benifit

I have never been sure of the spelling of mis-spelt either and seen various so guess it must be one too.

wumpus answers:

Awkward is supposed to be hard to type, so gets a lot of typos.

But I'd suggest that the most frequent is probably something like "adn" or "to/2/too/two"

Failing either of those, how about "Delete all notifictations".

I see this every time I click on "Show all" in the notifications window at the top of this screen.

mis-spelt is not allowed in scrabble because it is hyphenated which is against te rules governing allowable words according to the Official rules in the UK.
I had my bonus word 'SEALION' disallowed in one on-line game much to my chagrin as I have seen it spelt that way many times (Operation Sealion [German Invasion of UK 1940], and even on zoo websites eg :

Quite often there are spelling howlers that come up on the breaking news banner at the base of the BBC 24 hr News Channel, one night recently there were three all at one time which lasted for about 10 minutes before being corrected.
