Why does it take very little force to break natural rubber?

asked in science, rubber

Messerwisser answers:

It is elastic as long as i is warm, but when cooled down it becomes brittle.
But it is weaker than vulcanized rubber where the sulphur gives chemical cross bindings reinforcing the rubber.
