The problem I could foresee here is you get stuck with their pet that you have to feed for a lot longer at great cost to yourself. Personally I would chalk this one up to experience and not look after the animal ever again.

You could find yourself charged with animal napping as well so I would tread very carefully in regards to the law.

Depends on the basis under which you were looking after them.

If you were doing them a favour, then unless there was some agreement, it's down to you.

On the other hand, if you had agreed to look after them for money, or with the owners paying your costs, not only can you refuse to return them, you could also take them to small claims court.
