What's the earliest known crime organisation?
Did they have the equivalent of the mafia in the middle ages, or ancient Egypt?
asked in history, crime

rainchild answers:

This link gives a quotation about organised crime in 1840. http://www.karisable.com/crmob.htm Perhaps it was the coining of the phrase. How organised do you mean? The Bible refers to "bands of thieves".
This one speaks of pirates as being the earliest organised crime.

Can't find anything really old on this, but the legend of Robin Hood is enough to let you know that the concept is nothing new.
